Further Development and Modernization of a Customer Portal

THE INITIAL SITUATION

Over a period of seven years, we supported a major energy provider in the further development of its customer portal. The goal was to optimize existing processes, introduce new features, and simultaneously phase out outdated technologies.
Over the course of our collaboration, it became clear that both the continuous development of the existing portal and the replacement of individual legacy systems were crucial to meeting the growing demands for user-friendliness, security, and maintainability.

Over the course of our collaboration, it became clear that both the continuous development of the existing portal and the replacement of individual legacy systems were crucial to meeting the growing demands for user-friendliness, security, and maintainability.

THE SOLUTION

We implemented the requirements through two closely interlinked projects.
In the first step, we continuously enhanced the existing customer portal and provided operational support. In addition to implementing change requests, we optimized existing processes and integrated additional features and systems. This resulted in a noticeable improvement in user-friendliness and made workflows more efficient.
The connection to the identity provider was specifically expanded, and integration with SAP IS-U was extended via oData interfaces, leading to improved system interoperability. In addition, we implemented new functionalities such as contact forms, reporting features, and enhancements to the pricing tool. At the same time, a structured test management process was established, which improved quality and ensured stable long-term operation.
In a second phase, a major technological modernization was carried out by replacing the existing Neos system. To this end, we developed a new web solution as a static web app in the Azure Portal. The introduction of centralized authentication via Keycloak enhanced both security and consistency in user access.
In addition, a role- and routing-based concept as well as a new design framework were implemented, which significantly improved the user experience. Integration into the existing system landscape was achieved via a reverse proxy, enabling a seamless connection to the backend systems and ensuring the architecture’s future-proofing.
Both projects were implemented using an agile Scrum methodology, enabling flexible, iterative development.
