Independent yet effective: Building multiregional healthcare platforms

THE INITIAL SITUATION

A global healthcare provider faced the challenge of migrating its existing, jointly managed systems to a new, fully independent solution. The goal was to establish decoupled, independently controlled data platforms across multiple countries that would also enable federated analytics. To achieve this, we had to decouple the existing infrastructure which had been built in partnership with another organization - and redeploy it at other locations.

THE INITIAL SITUATION

A global healthcare provider faced the challenge of migrating its existing, jointly managed systems to a new, fully independent solution. The goal was to establish decoupled, independently controlled data platforms across multiple countries that would also enable federated analytics. To achieve this, we had to decouple the existing infrastructure which had been built in partnership with another organization – and redeploy it at other locations.

THE SOLUTION

We developed a new software and hardware infrastructure based on proven enterprise technologies. For clinical data, we relied on InterSystems IRIS for Health, HealthShare, and HealthInsights. We standardized financial processes using SAP S/4HANA components (FI, CO, MM, Success Factors).

To ensure seamless system integration within each country, we implemented an independent Denodo virtualization layer. It serves as a unified data access point for all analytics tools.

We carried out the migration according to a clearly structured, step-by-step strategy. In doing so, we reused proven components while accommodating specific local requirements. Our team extracted and documented the complete Enterprise Data Model (EDM) as well as the transformation logic from the reference systems. This critical step ensured that we preserved core data structures and business logic, which we then used as the foundation for building the platforms at the new locations.

Throughout this process, we consistently kept not only the requirements but also processes, individual, and industry-specific needs in mind:

  • By reusing EDM and integration frameworks, development efforts were significantly reduced compared to starting from scratch in each new country.
  • Each region now operates a fully sovereign data platform that serves as the foundation for supporting cross-regional consolidated analyses as business requirements evolve.
  • Regional teams were given responsibility for their analysis environments, enabling them to develop and customize reports and dashboards that meet their specific needs.
  • Standardization on InterSystems for clinical data and SAP for financial data ensures a maintainable, enterprise-level solution.

This project demonstrates how we successfully execute complex transformation initiatives involving many stakeholders with technical precision and a pragmatic approach to the business context. We do more than just implement technologies: we work in partnership with our clients, protect their investments, empower users, and thereby lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
