Migration of 80,000 B2C smart meters and upload of 8 billion profile values to SAP EDM
As part of IWB’s planned preparations for full market liberalization in the electricity and gas end customer segments, we were involved in a leading role in the “B2C migration” work package. Our focus here: smooth migration of the SAP EDM master data, complete synchronization with the peripheral systems and ensuring data quality.
THE CHALLENGES
The signs were high quantity, speed and complexity:
- More than 80,000 meters had to be migrated to load profile meters without interrupting the business
- Due to the large number of migration objects, the migration had to take into account the diversity of the different meters as automatically as possible and thus take into account special rules for different device types
- Necessary master data cleansing had to be identified and carried out
- The long runtimes for synchronizing the master data as well as the profile upload between SAP and the MDMS system made for a complex cutover
- In addition, a workable approach for prioritizing B2B profiles over B2C had to be designed and implemented

OUR APPROACH
As part of the complex project, we assumed a support function in the "Migration" work package. We were responsible for sub-project management, business analysis, requirements engineering and quality assurance of the technical migration of the meters in SAP. The following points were realized by us in this context in cooperation with IWB:
- Creation of the migration strategy, the migration concept as well as a quality assurance concept
Implementation of an SAP report for the analysis of load-capable meters - Implementation of evaluation tools in SAP for quality assurance of the migration programs, respectively the input and output data
- Assistance in the coordination and monitoring of the master data reconciliation with IDSpecto as well as the initial upload of the load profile data from IDSpecto to SAP
- Program for prioritizing B2B versus B2C profiles when uploading to the EDM system (IDSpecto) using BRF+

THE RESULT
With the core of Phase 2 in 2021, the migration of 80,000 smart meters and upload of 8 billion profile values within just two weekends, IWB broke new conceptual and technical ground in the Swiss utility industry. The successfully implemented project is a pioneering lighthouse project for other similar tasks.

ABOUT IWB
IWB supplies the Basel region. With energy. With water. With telecom. With mobility. In Switzerland, IWB is the first port of call for climate-friendly energy. In this way, IWB contributes to a high quality of life in the Basel region and beyond.
“In the second phase of the VOMA project (preparation for full market opening), inpeek supported us together with the main implementation partner in the area of migration of the 80,000 smart meters to make IWB fit for full market opening in the end customer segments of electricity and gas in the B2C area. The cooperation was always based on partnership and characterized by reliability. As a result, the one-off mass migration was implemented without errors and according to plan, despite the high integration risk and complexity. A big thank you for the professional support!”
